Tenants on Waddle Street in the Calabar South local government area of Cross River State punished their landlord, Mr. Obong Ete, with horse whips for allegedly stealing from them.
The incident occurred on Sunday, just an hour before the tenants and neighbors were heading to church. Residents reported that the 30-year-old, who is still single, had been terrorizing them almost every night.
Local resident Mr. Daniel Akpan claimed that, despite inheriting property from his late parents, the landlord had been stealing tenants’ belongings, including food items like yams and crops. “Obong Ete has been doing this for a long time. It’s good that he’s facing public disgrace again. He refuses to change, and youth leaders and vigilante groups have previously traced stolen goods to his apartment and beaten him up,” he said.
Another tenant, Esther Eyo, mentioned that the landlord had a history of stealing from a church, leading worshippers to curse him, which might explain his behavior.
Stanley Edem, another local tenant, alleged that the landlord had also broken into their homes and had curses placed upon him. After receiving severe beating, the landlord was handed over to the Mbukpa police station.
