The Federal Government has emphasized its dedication to protecting the rights of inmates, warning the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) against human rights violations. Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made this statement during a Performance Contract Signing Retreat in Abuja, highlighting the need for the NCoS to transform from a punitive system to one focused on rehabilitation.
He also directed the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to enhance security for power infrastructure and suggested the establishment of a Paramilitary Academy. The minister called for improvements in migration management and stressed the importance of identity management for national security. Permanent Secretary Dr. Magdalene Ajani noted that the retreat is a key opportunity to reaffirm the ministry’s mandate for public safety.
