Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has ordered an immediate crackdown on all illegal motor parks operating within the state.
In a statement issued on Monday, Abiodun highlighted that these unauthorized garages not only operate unlawfully but also exploit commuters, drivers, and residents with excessive fees and unclear charges, particularly at a time when the state government is working to lower transportation costs.
This directive follows action by the State Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, chaired by Alhaji Farook Akintunde, which recently shut down two illegal garages at NNPC Junction and near the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta due to their environmental impact and illegal roadside operations.
The statement noted, “While praising the Taskforce, Abiodun has ordered the statewide extension of this initiative to fully eliminate illegal garages, especially in the Mowe-Ibafo area and Sango-Ota.”
Additionally, the governor pointed out that these illegal garages not only exploit commuters but also present security threats, as they often serve as hideouts for criminals operating from makeshift structures.
“As a responsible government, we cannot allow the operators of these garages to endanger our citizens,” Abiodun stated. “This is a critical time when our people need all possible support to navigate the current economic challenges in the country.”
He also encouraged residents to avoid using illegal garages and instead utilize government-sanctioned facilities, including the government’s CNG buses, for more affordable and comfortable transportation options.
