On Monday, the governors of the 19 Northern states gathered in Kaduna for a meeting with Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa to address critical issues facing the region. Traditional rulers were also present, highlighting the meeting’s significance as part of the Northern States Governors’ Forum’s initiative to engage stakeholders on pressing challenges, including ongoing insecurity, poverty, and the out-of-school children crisis.
General Musa provided updates on military efforts to combat banditry, terrorism, and other security concerns affecting the North. Attendees included governors from Kaduna, Gombe, Zamfara, Nasarawa, Borno, Bauchi, Kwara, and Adamawa, along with deputy governors from other Northern states.
Prominent traditional leaders at the meeting included the Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Saad; the Shehu of Borno, Umar El-Kanemi; the Emir of Zazzau, Nuhu Bamali; the Ohinoyi of Ebira land; Etsu Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar; the Emir of Kazaure; and the Emir of Bauchi.
In their opening remarks, governors Yahaya and Sani emphasized the urgent need for decisive action to tackle the ongoing insecurity that has adversely affected the economy of Northern Nigeria.
