The Nigerian Army is responding to a significant manpower shortfall, particularly in the Mechanical Engineering Corps, following the voluntary retirement of over 1,008 soldiers in the past four years. To fill these gaps, the Army plans to re-engage discharged soldiers, as indicated in a recent memo.
Army spokesperson Maj Gen Onyema Nwachukwu emphasized the importance of maintaining operational safety while highlighting that the newly sought personnel would be re-engaged on a contract basis. Experts and retired military officials have expressed support for this move, citing the value of experienced veterans, but also raised concerns about underlying issues driving current soldiers to resign, including inadequate welfare and support post-service.
