A viral video captures a Nigerian lawmaker allegedly assaulting an Uber driver in Abuja, sparking widespread criticism and calls for accountability
A video circulating online allegedly shows Honorable Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, assaulting an Uber driver during a delivery at his residence in Maitama, Abuja.
Ikwechegh, the representative of Aba North and South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is at the heart of an escalating controversy as a video circulates on social media platforms.
The incident allegedly occurred when the Uber driver delivered items, thought to be snails, to Ikwechegh’s home.
Reports suggest that the confrontation started when the driver declined to deliver the items inside the lawmaker’s home, instead requesting Ikwechegh to retrieve them from the car himself. This request apparently heightened tensions and resulted in a heated altercation.
In the video, Ikwechegh is visibly angry as he confronts the driver and makes threatening remarks. He can be heard saying, “Can you imagine this rat? I have the power to make this man disappear in Nigeria without any consequences,” while asserting his authority as a member of the House of Representatives.
At one moment, the lawmaker is purportedly seen striking the driver. In another section of the footage, a shirtless driver appears in his car, alleging that Ikwechegh ripped his clothing during their confrontation.
This incident has ignited a surge of outrage on social media, as numerous Nigerians call for accountability and justice.
Residents have urged the appropriate authorities to look into the issue and address the lawmaker’s behavior, highlighting ongoing concerns about public trust in elected officials.
@MayJaYBaE commented: “He threatened to make him disappear in Nigeria without any consequences simply because he asked for an item. He perceived it as disrespectful, when all that was needed was the basic courtesy of asking someone to bring something inside the house politely. Instead, he expected a regular Bolt driver to grovel at his feet. Ridiculous classism.”
@ChuksOhaxx expressed: “God has really blessed this guy… he should find a good lawyer and sue that man. This is a life-changing opportunity with evidence. Lmao.”
@Seankleann commented: “Even if he files an assault lawsuit, as a member of the House of Representatives, I doubt that @PoliceNG will handle this case fairly. I’m skeptical about the verdict being in favor of that Uber driver. Do you know why? Because he’s a NOBODY. Just watch how this issue gets ignored.”
@HeDontMakeNoise said, “I will make you disappear and nothing will happen,” right? This statement alone is enough to destroy his political career for good. However, it’s frustrating to see some Nigerians defending these disgraceful actions despite the obvious implications.
Bolt, a well-known ride-hailing service in Nigeria, has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident involving one of its drivers.
Neither the House of Representatives nor the APGA leadership has issued any statements concerning Ikwechegh’s actions, who was elected to represent his constituency in Abia State.
