The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities is set to begin an indefinite strike on Monday.
This decision comes after the seven-day ultimatum given to the Nigerian Government to address withheld salaries expires at midnight (on Sunday). The strike is a response to the government’s failure to pay outstanding salaries, which led to the invocation of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy during the prolonged strike in 2022.
According to Mohammed Ibrahim, National President of SSANU, and Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU, the government had been given ample time to resolve the issue.
Previously, the unions had given the government a 10-day grace period, which expired on July 26, 2024, to pay the four months of outstanding salaries to university staff.
The indefinite strike is set to commence due to the government’s inaction, and it’s unclear how long it will last or what impact it will have on the education sector.
