A central Florida woman has been found guilty of second-degree murder for leaving her boyfriend to die after he was zipped inside a suitcase in their home. Sarah Boone was convicted by a jury on Friday evening, four years after her arrest in connection with the death of Jorge Torres. Boone had pleaded not guilty, claiming the incident was part of a game. According to the prosecution, Boone initially told detectives that she and Torres were playing hide-and-seek at their Winter Park residence on February 23, 2020, and thought it would be amusing for him to climb into the suitcase while they had been drinking. She went to sleep, believing he would be able to escape when he wanted to.
When Boone woke up the next morning, she discovered Torres unresponsive inside the suitcase. Detectives later charged her with murder after finding videos on her cellphone in which Torres could be heard yelling for help and struggling to breathe while trapped inside.
During the trial, Boone argued that past violent incidents with Torres made her feel threatened, asserting that her actions were in self-defense.
However, the autopsy report revealed Torres had sustained multiple injuries from blunt force trauma. Boone, who has changed attorneys several times since her arrest, faces a potential life sentence and is set to be sentenced on December 2.
