A Florida man faces potential prison time after being accused of discarding a mail-in ballot and other election-related mail while serving as a contract postal worker.
Ottis McCoy was arrested by federal authorities on Friday for allegedly throwing away over 1,000 pieces of mail instead of delivering them during his Orlando route. He is charged with stealing, taking, or abstracting mail, a crime that could result in a fine of up to $250,000 and a prison sentence of up to five years.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) became aware of the situation when another postal worker noticed suspicious behavior from McCoy, including an unusually early return from his route.
Surveillance footage showed McCoy discarding large amounts of mail into a wooded area near his route. Among the discarded items were more than 400 pieces of political mail and one election ballot. As of now, it remains unclear if McCoy has obtained legal representation.
This incident follows another recent case involving a Tennessee postal worker accused of improperly disposing of mail, raising concerns about the security of election mail ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
