Volkswagen subsidiary Scout Motors is preparing to launch two new vehicles—a pickup truck and an SUV—into the competitive electric vehicle (EV) market. Priced in the $60,000 range, both models will offer a gas engine option and are expected to reach the U.S. market by 2027. Initially, Scout aimed for a 2026 release for its first U.S. vehicles, but it now emphasizes the advanced features of these new offerings, including a body-on-frame chassis, solid rear axle, and front and rear mechanical lockers. The expected powertrain will deliver an impressive 1,000 pound-feet of torque, allowing for acceleration from zero to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh highlighted the challenges facing the auto industry during the unveiling of the new models, mentioning labor tensions, the transition to EVs, and geopolitical uncertainties as major hurdles.
The company anticipates that the fully electric vehicles will offer a range of up to 350 miles, utilizing the Tesla charging system. Additionally, Scout plans to include a built-in gas-powered generator to extend the range up to 500 miles, catering to consumers who may prefer hybrid models.
Since the brand’s establishment in 2022, following VW’s acquisition of the International Harvester trademark, Scout Motors is also set to produce these vehicles at a new facility in South Carolina, which will focus on creating a new generation of all-electric trucks and rugged SUVs.
