The Kano State Government, on Friday, distributed N28.4 million to 62 victims of fire disaster in the state.
Governor Abba-Yusuf, made the disclosure while unveiling the distribution of cash to persons affected by the disaster in Kano.
The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hajiya Abdullahi, said the gesture was part of the state governmentโs intervention to bring succour to the affected victims.
โWe are here to console and support the victims and to help ease their pains with this token,โ she said.
The Executive Secretary, Kano State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Isyaku Kubarachi, said the affected individuals lost property valued at N835.9 million.
โOut of the 62 victims, seven lost their lives, while 11 victims from Dakata small scale benefited from the gesture.
โWe conducted an assessment to determine the extent of damage and prepared a comprehensive report to the State Government for assistance,โ he said.
Kubarachi commended Governor Yusuf, the Nigeria Red Cross, the National Emergency Management Agency, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPโs as well as other stakeholders for their support.
Also, NEMA Coordinator, Kano Territorial Office, Dr Nuraddeen Abdullahi, urged members of the public, especially women using firewood and charcoal, to handle fire with care.
He advised them to always switch off their electrical appliances whenever โthey are going out or going to bed, to avoid inferno.โ
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ahmadu Sale, from Tudun Wada, Nassarawa local government, thanked the government for the support.
โMy son, his wife, and five children lost their lives in an inferno due to an electrical fault sometime in 2024 at about 3:00 a.m.,โ he lamented.
