Elon Musk’s super PAC has resumed its daily $1 million giveaways to registered voters in swing states, continuing despite a warning letter from the Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding potential legal violations. After seemingly pausing the initiative on Wednesday, America PAC distributed two $1 million checks on Thursday to individuals in Wisconsin and Michigan.
The DOJ’s Public Integrity Section cautioned that the sweepstakes could infringe upon federal laws against incentivizing voter registration.
Since launching the giveaways on Saturday, America PAC has awarded six checks, with the first three winners coming from Pennsylvania, where Musk has been actively supporting former President Trump. Participants must be registered voters in one of seven swing states and have signed a petition promoting free speech and gun rights.
While the PAC has taken a prominent role in efforts to boost voter turnout for Trump’s campaign, its unconventional methods have attracted scrutiny.
Public officials, including some from Republican administrations, have called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate the legality of the payments, suggesting they may constitute illegal incentives for voter registration.
