According to a report from Channels TV. On Monday, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), announced the revocation of Julius Berger’s certificate of occupancy for multiple plots in the Katampe District of Abuja. This decision is part of the government’s initiative to secure land for the construction of new quarters for judges in the capital. The plots in question were previously allocated to the renowned German construction firm.
Wike made this announcement during an official ceremony marking the start of the Design and Construction of 40 Judges’ Quarters in Abuja. The event was attended by key figures from the judiciary, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, along with various other dignitaries.
The project aims to provide essential housing for judges, an initiative that Wike emphasized as crucial for the judiciary’s well-being. He noted that 70% of the necessary funding for the construction has already been released, following the project’s approval by the Federal Executive Council in September. The plan includes the construction of 40 residential units distributed among three major courts in Abuja: the FCT High Court will receive 20 units, while the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal will each be allocated 10 units.
Wike highlighted the significance of providing adequate housing for judges, particularly for their post-retirement years. He argued that secure accommodation helps protect judicial members from external pressures and influences, thereby ensuring the independence and integrity of the courts. “Ensuring their financial security is critical in maintaining judicial integrity,” he stated.
The decision to revoke the land allocated to Julius Berger follows a thorough search for suitable locations for the judges’ quarters. During his exploration of potential sites, Wike discovered the available plots in the Katampe District, which led to his decision to reclaim the land. He explained the rationale behind his actions, emphasizing the need to facilitate the construction project without delays
During his remarks, Wike noted, “When we were looking for where to get land to build, I was driving around looking for empty land, and I found this location.”
As the project moves forward, it signifies a commitment to improving the working and living conditions for judges in Nigeria’s capital, highlighting the government’s recognition of the judiciary’s role in upholding democracy and justice in the nation.
