2009 was a good year for me as Pype was all over the airwaves at a point in time when Africa needed to be reminded they were “Champions”… so I made a mix of Sean Paul in Afro music.
I had Sasha, late Dagrin and Naeto C on the remix and it went global… legends!
I was in ma prime, feeling myself and signing autographs everywhere…
As a true Rastafarian and “Barrack boy”, my brand identity was my natural dreadlocks or “Dada” as it is called on the streets of Lagos.
I used to wear camouflage as it is a global culture for the Rastafarians worldwide.
However, I was on my way to Ikeja that fateful day for a meet up with Marvelous Benji, when I was pulled over by men of the military in a checkpoint.
They asked me “Senior man, which Barrack Na?”
and I replied speaking my usual Jamaican Patios “Yuh Ya Dan Kno, Me Na 5 Star General Pype, check ya radio man”
Before I could say more, a gigantic palm from nowhere covered my full face which left my sight blurry for about 5 Minutes.
I had to use pidgin to explain “I was that musician that sang Champion”
Till today, I haven’t still recovered from that hot military slap
