The Nigerian Senate has condemned the recent local government elections held in various states, labeling them a “sham” and a “rape of democracy.”
According to Vanguard, this declaration followed a motion introduced by Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), focusing on the elections in Benue State, which he characterized as lacking credibility.
Senator Emmanuel Udende (APC, Benue North East) supported the motion, stating that, despite his party affiliation, he could not endorse an unjust process.
Similarly, Senator Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West) denounced the elections, claiming there were no genuine elections across all 23 local governments in Benue.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin criticized the elections as a “national calamity,” emphasizing the public’s disillusionment with the electoral process.
He noted that citizens are often absent on election days due to pre-determined results, undermining the essence of democracy.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, urged for constitutional amendments to reposition local governments as a vital third tier of governance.
He recognized the Supreme Court’s ruling on direct funding for local governments but stressed the need for credible election processes to restore public trust.
