The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified, mainly due to disputes involving Rivers State and the ongoing conflict between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed. This has led to a factional split in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
Acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has been criticized, with calls for his resignation.
The situation worsened when Damagum supported Wike in controversial moves, including delaying the National Executive Committee meeting and organizing contentious congresses in Rivers State.
The fallout escalated as Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara opposed Wike’s influence, leading to threats from Wike and tensions with the PDP Governors’ Forum.
Wike’s camp faced a setback when most of the newly elected local government chairmen in Rivers were from a rival party.
The NWC, dominated by Wike’s supporters, responded by suspending National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, accusing them of opposing Wike’s influence. In retaliation, Ologunagba’s faction suspended Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu for alleged disloyalty.
The Board of Trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, has called for peace and urged both factions to resolve the crisis and restore unity in the party.
