Aisha Somtochukwu Yesufu was born on December 12, 1973. She is a Nigerian activist and businesswoman.
Aisha helped start the #BringBackOurGirls movement. This movement drew attention to the kidnapping of over 200 girls from a school in Chibok, Nigeria, on April 14, 2014. The terrorist group Boko Haram did the kidnapping. Aisha also played a big role in the End SARS movement. This movement fought against police violence in Nigeria.
Aisha was born and grew up in Kano State. Her family is from Agbede in Edo State. Growing up, Aisha faced many difficulties because she was a girl. By age 11, all her female friends had either gotten married or died giving birth. By age 24, most of her remaining friends were becoming grandmothers.
Aisha loved reading as a child. Reading showed her a better life existed beyond her neighborhood. In 1991, she tried to join the Nigerian Defence Academy but was rejected because she’s a woman.
In 1992, Aisha started attending Usmanu Danfodiyo University. But the school closed, so she went to Ahmadu Bello University to study medicine. She left Ahmadu Bello University too, after a professor was killed in 1994.
Aisha finished her studies at Bayero University Kano, graduating with a degree in microbiology. She married Aliu Osigwe Yesufu in 1998. They have two kids, Amir and Alliyyah.
