An escalation of violence in Lebanon has resulted in the deaths of 65 medical workers and injured 40 others in 16 attacks on healthcare facilities since September 17, according to the United Nations Office at Geneva.
The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Deputy Incident Manager, Ian Clarke, expressed deep concern over the impact of the violence on Lebanon’s health system, including the rising attacks on healthcare workers and facilities.
Clarke stated, “Since 17 September, 16 attacks on healthcare had been recorded, leaving behind 65 deaths and 40 injuries among health staff.”
The violence has forced 96 primary healthcare centres and facilities to close in southern Lebanon, with five hospitals ceasing operations due to infrastructure damage and four hospitals partially evacuated.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah forces in southern Lebanon has intensified since October 1, with Israel conducting ground operations and airstrikes—what many describe as a genocide.
The situation remains dire, which makes the UN urge all parties involved to protect healthcare workers and facilities.
