Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, expressed his deep sadness following the destruction of the Ikwerre Local Government Council Secretariat in Isiokpo, reportedly set ablaze by political thugs.
During his visit to assess the damage, Governor Fubara called for responsible politics, emphasizing that violence should not be a part of the political process.
“Seeing this destruction is disheartening. Politics should be played with a sense of responsibility; we don’t need to destroy ourselves or government property. My time will come, and I will leave. Do I need to burn the Government House when I go?” Fubara lamented.
He recounted how the council secretariat, built by the immediate past chairman, should have stood as a legacy project but was instead reduced to ruins due to political violence. The governor expressed frustration that funds meant for other important projects would now have to be used to repair the damage.
Fubara urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice, asserting that it was not instigated by his supporters.
