In Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara obtained the swearing-in of 23 newly elected local government chairs.
The Rivers State Independent National Electoral Commission (RSIEC) held an election at the grassroots on Sunday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, in the Executive Council Chambers.
Governor of Bauchi State Bala Mohammed, who is also the Governors’ Forum’s Chairman, also attended the gathering.
The governor praised the LG election’s success, saying that God’s assistance has been needed to survive the last few days.
He also praised Democratic President Bola Tinubu.
Fubara, who assured Mohammed that he is still a member of PDP, however, said that a desperate situation requires desperate action. His administration’s goal, in his opinion, was to restore the local government councils with the support of the people.
He declared that he would not violate the laws of his opponent by acting aggressively to safeguard the state’s assets and impede the operation of law and order.
He advised the new chairmen to view themselves as servants rather than emperors.
He claimed that the local government areas needed to be developed so that they could serve the real political system.
The newly elected local government chairmen were given certificates of return earlier on Sunday from RSIEC.
After an exercise held amid heightened tension, the Action People’s Party (APP) won 22 chairmanship positions out of 23 in the oil-rich state.
The state electoral umpire, however, suspended the Etche Local Government Area (LGA) results declaration due to ongoing collation.
When collations are concluded, RSIEC chairman Adolphus Enebeli, who announced the results on Saturday, added that an announcement for the 319 councillorship seats will be made as well as the Etche Chairmanship position.
However, the Action Alliance (AA) candidate Uzodinma Nwafor of Etche Local Government Area was declared the winner a day later.
He described the election as free, fair, and credible, despite all odds. He claimed that the polls closed at 3 p.m. and that there was a sizable turnout.
Enebeli praised the fervent citizenship of the electorates.
Members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), the chairmen of the state’s independent electoral bodies, and members of the Nigerian Bar Association who served as observers observed the results.
