According to a report from VANGUARD news, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has expressed concerns over the party’s recent defeat in the Rivers State Local Government elections.
Speaking in the aftermath of the polls, Wabara lamented the party’s loss of control, particularly in grassroots governance, a domain where the PDP had previously maintained dominance since 1999.
Wabara attributed the party’s poor performance to internal divisions and political mismanagement within the state.
He stressed that repeated warnings from senior party officials were ignored, leading to the unexpected rise of the Action People’s Party (APP), which secured 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions in the state.
This outcome marks a significant shift in Rivers’ political landscape, with the PDP losing influence in a state that had long been one of its strongholds.
In his reflection, Wabara noted that this loss signifies a larger challenge for the PDP, hinting that if internal conflicts persist, the party’s chances in the 2027 general elections may be in jeopardy.
He emphasized the need for reconciliation among PDP members to rebuild the party’s base and regain the trust of the electorate in Rivers State.
Despite these concerns, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) confirmed that the results were a reflection of the electorate’s decision, further noting that the APP’s success in securing a vast majority of local government seats was an indication of changing political dynamics in the state.
Wabara’s comments come as a cautionary tale for the PDP, emphasizing the importance of internal cohesion and listening to party elders as the party navigates future electoral challenges.
