Sue Gray, chief of staff to Britain’s prime minister Keir Starmer, resigned unexpectedly on Sunday following weeks of speculation about internal disputes at Downing Street, media scrutiny over her salary, and questions regarding several political missteps.
In her statement, Gray explained that the intense focus on her position had “become a distraction” to the government’s work, prompting her decision to step down.
Prime Minister Starmer expressed his gratitude for Gray’s support both in opposition and in government, acknowledging her efforts in preparing the Labour Party for governance.
Gray will now serve as the prime minister’s envoy for regions and nations, while Morgan McSweeney, who led Labour’s successful election campaign, will assume the role of chief of staff.
The Conservative Party, in response, criticized the resignation, claiming it reflected chaos within Starmer’s administration just 100 days into Labour’s term.
