Kano State Hisbah Bans Sports Betting, Tightens Restrictions on Public Morality in ‘Operation Flush Out Immorality
The Kano State Hisbah Board has taken a bold step by officially banning all forms of sports betting across the state as part of its intensified efforts to curb immoral activities. This new directive was announced by Dr. Mujaheed Aminuddeen, the Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah, during a press briefing on October 2, 2024.
In line with the Hisbah Board’s mission to promote societal order and Islamic values, Dr. Mujaheed highlighted the board’s re-launch of “Operation Flush Out Immorality,” a rigorous campaign aimed at clamping down on practices they view as undermining social order and religious principles. As part of this renewed campaign, Hisbah operatives will soon begin enforcing these new regulations across Kano State.
Beyond the ban on sports betting, Dr. Mujaheed warned landlords that they would face serious consequences if they rent properties to individuals without proper identification, particularly citing concerns about some residences being converted into illegal lodges and motels.
In a move to further control interactions between men and women, particularly in public spaces, the Hisbah Board has also introduced new regulations regarding courtship. The board declared that prospective couples would not be permitted to sit together in tinted vehicles, especially during nighttime. This move is part of a broader crackdown on public behaviors deemed inappropriate by the Hisbah.
Dr. Mujaheed also reinforced the state’s prohibition of street begging, with a focus on women, noting that any female beggars found loitering after dark would be arrested. Additionally, the Hisbah Board announced that women seen riding in tricycles (Keke NAPEP) after 10 p.m. would be apprehended, citing concerns about a surge in prostitution among young girls in Kano.
He concluded with a stern warning that those found violating these rules would face severe penalties. He also called on parents to exercise greater responsibility in monitoring their children’s activities, particularly advising them to keep a close eye on their daughters to prevent any involvement in misconduct.
This new wave of regulations from the Kano State Hisbah Board signals a significant shift towards stricter enforcement of Sharia law in public spaces, reinforcing its stance against any activities deemed to encourage immorality.
