Garcia Glen White, a former resident of Houston, was executed by lethal injection at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Huntsville, Texas, for the 1989 murders of twin teenage sisters Annette and Bernette Edwards. White was also convicted of killing their mother, Bonita Edwards, during the same violent episode.
His attorneys attempted to appeal the death penalty by claiming he suffered from mental health issues exacerbated by his extensive crack cocaine use, but these arguments were ultimately rejected. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed his legal appeals, citing a lack of merit and untimeliness, while the U.S. Supreme Court chose not to intervene.
The brutal crimes occurred shortly after the twins turned 16, just weeks before Christmas in 1989. Under the influence of crack cocaine, White confronted Bonita Edwards in her apartment, fatally stabbing her before attacking the twins.
Initially, the murders went unsolved until 1996, when White was connected to the deaths of two other individuals in unrelated cases. Although he was prosecuted for multiple murders, the jury found him guilty only of killing the twins.
Once a promising football player whose career ended due to injury, White struggled with addiction afterward. Several relatives of the victims were present to witness his execution at the Huntsville Unit correctional facility, located north of Houston.
