A solar project aimed at benefiting the University of Arkansas system is set to receive nearly $32 million, marking what is anticipated to be the largest commercial and industrial solar initiative in Arkansas’s history.
The funding was announced by Climate United, a national nonprofit coalition, which stated that the pre-construction financing would be allocated to Scenic Hill Solar. This investment represents the coalition’s first allocation from the nearly $7 billion received from the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Clean Investment Fund, established under the Inflation Reduction Act, a significant climate law signed by President Joe Biden in 2022.
The ambitious project will involve the construction of 18 solar power plants, projected to save the University of Arkansas system over $120 million in energy costs over the next 25 years.
This initiative is expected to benefit more than 70,000 students and 17,000 employees across various campuses. Scenic Hill Solar’s CEO, Bill Halter, described this as a historic moment for solar development in Arkansas, emphasizing that the partnership with Climate United is instrumental in delivering the most ambitious solar power development in the state’s history.
