North Carolina’s GOP Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s troubled campaign is struggling as Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein leads by double digits in two new polls. A Washington Post survey shows Stein ahead with 54% compared to Robinson’s 38%, while an East Carolina University (ECU) poll has Stein at 50% to Robinson’s 33%.
These polls were conducted before Hurricane Helene hit, devastating the western region of the state, where at least 40 lives have been lost and many remain missing.
Robinson’s campaign has faced significant scrutiny following a CNN report linking him to controversial comments made on a pornographic website’s message board over a decade ago, where he purportedly identified as a “Black Nazi” and made inflammatory remarks supporting slavery.
Despite Robinson’s denials and his dismissal of the report as “salacious tabloid trash,” GOP pressure for him to withdraw from the race has intensified.
Support for Robinson among Republican voters has dropped 20 percentage points since last month, according to the ECU poll.
Meanwhile, voter motivation remains high across party lines, with 84% of Republicans and 78% of Democrats expressing strong intent to vote.
