CBS News announced on Tuesday that former President Donald J. Trump will not participate in an upcoming interview with “60 Minutes,” which was scheduled to air as part of a prime-time election special next week. This special, a longstanding tradition for the program, is set to air on Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern and will feature interviews with Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota.
Although Trump initially accepted an invitation to be interviewed by correspondent Scott Pelley, CBS received notice on Tuesday that his campaign had decided to decline.
A spokesperson for Trump, Steven Cheung, contested CBSās portrayal of the situation, stating in a post on X that “60 Minutes” had “begged for an interview” and that while initial discussions occurred, nothing was finalized.
Typically, “60 Minutes” conducts interviews with both major-party candidates in the lead-up to presidential elections, and CBS noted that Trump’s campaign was the first to accept its invitation. Each candidate was to have two segments in the one-hour broadcast, and Pelley is expected to address this development with viewers on Monday.
This incident is not the first contentious interaction between Trump and “60 Minutes”; in 2020, Trumpās campaign cut short an interview with correspondent Lesley Stahl, criticizing her approach and sharing unedited footage online. For the upcoming episode, Harris will be interviewed by correspondent Bill Whitaker.
