Lawyers for Mayor Eric Adams have accused federal prosecutors of leaking details about the investigation that led to his recent indictment, according to a court filing made on Tuesday morning. In the document, attorney Alex Spiro referenced several articles from The New York Times that reported on the investigation’s scope over the past year.
Adams’s legal team argues that these reports have created a prejudiced public perception against the mayor. They state that by the time the indictment was unsealed on September 26, 2024, much of the indictment’s details had already been widely disseminated, which they claim undermines the integrity of the legal process.
The court filing comes shortly after federal prosecutors announced the five-count indictment against Adams, marking a significant moment as it’s the first time in modern history that a sitting New York City mayor has faced criminal charges.
Amid calls for his resignation from various New York politicians, Adams has been actively seeking support, visiting churches, and holding press conferences. The allegations include bribery conspiracy, fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations from the Turkish government, which Adams has categorically denied.
His lawyers have requested a hearing to address their claims about leaks and potential sanctions against the prosecution, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
