Tragedy in Yobe: Police Inspector Allegedly Stabs Man to Death Over N200 Bribe
In a disturbing incident in Damaturu, Yobe State, a Nigerian police inspector, Mohammed Bulama, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a resident, Abdulmalik Pompomari, to death over a dispute involving a N200 bribe. The tragic event occurred at 5:05 pm on Sunday in the CMC Area, Zango, Damaturu.
According to multiple sources, Inspector Bulama, attached to the Police Mobile Force (PMF) 41 Division in Damaturu, demanded N200 from Pompomari during an encounter. When Pompomari refused to comply, a heated argument ensued, leading to a violent altercation.
A witness recounted the horrifying scene: “Inspector Bulama demanded N200 from Abdulmalik Dauda Galadima at CMC Area, Zango Damaturu. When Abdulmalik refused, Inspector Bulama assaulted him with a knife, cutting him around the neck and chest, which led to his death.”
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Yobe State, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, has ordered an investigation into the homicide. He further explained that the confrontation between the two men escalated from an argument over a transaction into a deadly fight.
“Inspector Bulama stabbed Abdulmalik in the chest during the altercation, and he (Bulama) also sustained head injuries during the scuffle. After the incident, Bulama sought refuge at the ‘C’ Division Police Headquarters, where he was promptly arrested,” the PPRO stated.
The Yobe State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a full investigation into the incident. Bulama remains in custody, facing both internal disciplinary action and likely prosecution for the fatal stabbing.
This tragic event has sparked outrage and further fueled concerns about police brutality and corruption in Nigeria. The alleged killing over such a small sum of money—N200—has drawn attention to the issue of officers extorting money from citizens, often leading to unnecessary violence. Many Nigerians are demanding justice for Pompomari, calling for accountability and reform within the police force.
