In a bizarre incident that unfolded in the Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State, a young man was rescued by police after climbing a 33kv high-tension pole, insisting that President Bola Tinubu must resign before he would come down. The incident, which began on Friday morning, September 27, 2024, coincided with the market day in Mayo-Belwa, drawing the attention of locals and passersby along the Yola-Jalingo highway.
Eyewitnesses reported that the man remained adamant, stating that he would not descend from the high-tension pole until President Tinubu vacated the presidential villa. His unusual protest lasted well into the night, and it took the combined efforts of the police and local community members to convince him to safely come down by Saturday night.
Speaking about the incident, the Adamawa State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguruje, confirmed that the man is now in protective custody at the Criminal Investigation Department. According to Nguruje, the individual will face charges for attempted suicide, which is a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
“The command is going to parade the man today (Monday) for attempting suicide. Attempting to take one’s life is a criminal offense under our constitution, so we will be charging him to court,” SP Nguruje explained.
He further emphasized that it is the duty of the police to protect lives and property, and that includes preventing individuals from taking their own lives. Nguruje made it clear that anyone who attempts to do so will be made to face the full consequences of the law.
This unusual protest has sparked widespread discussion across Adamawa State, with many wondering what might have driven the young man to such a drastic action.
