We, the Ukwuani Social Improvement League (USIL), are deeply concerned about the ongoing neglect of the needs of the people of Delta State, particularly the Ukwuani people, by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, despite the substantial federal allocations received by Delta State. It is disheartening to witness the lack of significant improvements in the lives of our people despite the state receiving one of the largest allocations from the Federal Government.
We commend Senator Nwoko for fearlessly speaking out against the governor’s failures, especially considering the prevalent trend of Nigerian politicians prioritizing party loyalty over accountability. Nwoko’s decision to challenge the governor, despite belonging to the same political party, is a commendable display of prioritizing the needs of his constituents over party politics. This departure from typical political behavior underscores the crucial importance of holding elected officials accountable for their actions.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s justification for not supporting the Okpai Independent Power Project (IPP) or engaging with foreign companies is unacceptable. His claim that Delta State is solely servicing loans borrowed by Ifeanyi Okowa appears to be an attempt to marginalize the Ukwuani people. Is repaying Okowa’s loans truly more important than investing in critical infrastructure and development projects in Delta State?
The Ukwuani nation boasts substantial oil and natural gas reserves, contributing significantly to the state’s wealth. However, despite the federal government allocations, our people continue to be overlooked. It is unjust and ironic that our resources drive the state’s economy, yet our people are neglected. We deserve better. It is disappointing that Governor Oborevwori prioritizes debt repayment over the critical infrastructure and development projects required for the state’s progress.
The Okpai Independent Power Project (IPP) has the potential to bring about transformative change for Delta State, especially for the Ukwuani people. This initiative is expected to deliver reliable electricity, foster economic development, and enhance the overall quality of life. By supporting this project, the government would acknowledge the valuable contributions of the Ukwuani people to Nigeria’s energy sector.
The people of Delta State deserve transparency and accountability from the Sheriff’s government. It is crucial for Sheriff Oborevwori to demonstrate his capacity to make independent decisions and prioritize the state’s development over personal interests. One key area where this leadership is needed is in the sponsorship of the Okpai Independent Power Project (IPP) to drive growth and development can bring numerous benefits to the state, including reliable electricity, economic growth, and improved living standards.
By taking this step, Governor Oborevwori can show his commitment to the people of Delta State and prove that his administration is dedicated to their well-being. The time for action is now.
