Governor Siminialayi Fubara of Rivers State has suspended Otonye Briggs, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, citing allegations of disloyalty.
According to The Nation, Briggs faced accusations of aligning with the camp of former Governor Nyesom Wike, particularly in the wake of recent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congresses, which Fubara and his political allies boycotted.
Briggs reportedly congratulated newly elected party officials, raising concerns among Fubara’s team about his loyalty.
In addition to issues of disloyalty, Briggs has been criticized for perceived non-performance, with stakeholders claiming he failed to fulfill his promises and account for funds intended for local empowerment.
Some community members expressed their dissatisfaction on social media, describing him as ineffective and calling for his removal.
Conversely, others defended Briggs, praising him as a “silent achiever” who has delivered good governance, including the provision of local government-funded electricity and job creation for over 200 casual workers.
Supporters argue that the allegations against him are unfounded, asserting that he has positively impacted the Akuku-Toru community.
The suspension comes just weeks before the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024.
