Strong winds have intensified fires caused by downed power lines and carelessness in Russia’s southern Rostov region, according to Governor Vasily Golubev.
As of Sunday, authorities have recorded over 50 fires, with 30 still active. Some fires have spread to residential areas, prompting limited evacuations.
Over 2,000 firefighters and nearly 300 pieces of equipment are working to control the blazes.
The Rostov region, a crucial agricultural area that contributed over 11% of Russia’s grain harvest last year, is now facing significant challenges.
Early spring frosts and a drought in 2024 are expected to reduce this yearโs harvest by 30% compared to 2023.
