President Tinubu has approved N108b to support states in combating the ongoing flooding crisis affecting several regions in Nigeria.
To tackle the escalating danger posed by natural calamities nationwide, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted authorization for a sum of N108 billion to be disbursed towards state efforts in mitigating the impacts of flooding and erosion.
As part of this intervention, the Federal Government has allocated N3 billion to each state.
The funding arrives during a crucial period, with severe floods causing extensive damage in the northern states and daunting peril lingering for numerous southern states.
The escalating damage in the Southeast and certain areas of Kaduna is a significant concern, particularly regarding erosion alongside flooding.
NiMet has issued a warning regarding increased rainfall and subsequent flooding as the year progresses, thus intensifying the need for swift disaster relief efforts.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has recently verified the reception of N3 billion allocated towards mitigating flood-related problems that arose due to the failure of Alau Dam’s water channels.
The severe humanitarian impact was emphasized by him as he pointed out that the disaster has caused over one million people to be displaced.
After temporarily relocating to Maiduguri to supervise relief efforts in Borno State, Vice President Kashim Shettima returned to the Presidential Villa and held a meeting with House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.
At the meeting, Shettima affirmed that President Tinubu had approved the disaster management fund and emphasized the government’s dedication to collaborating with states in tackling this emergency.
Shettima expressed that the President has demonstrated enthusiasm, readiness, and dedication to collaborating with states in resolving these matters. He further noted that this allotment is just one aspect of a comprehensive plan aimed at empowering all regions of the country to handle the repercussions of ecological calamities.
Speaker Abbas pledged that the National Assembly would extend complete aid to those impacted by calamities. “We are examining various forms of assistance for individuals affected,” he affirmed, vowing to work towards resettling displaced persons and reinstating regularity in their lives.
Despite the large number of newly inducted members, Shettima praised the Speaker’s leadership within the National Assembly and expressed optimism about continual cooperation between legislative and executive divisions to address pressing national issues.
With the distribution of authorized funds to states, it is anticipated that these endeavors will ease the catastrophic aftermaths caused by natural calamities and facilitate Nigerians who have been dislocated in reconstructing their livelihood.
