Gambia’s parliament has approved a minimum sentence of five years for same-sex offenses, rejecting an earlier recommendation of a two-year misdemeanor sentence. The decision was made during the debate on the Criminal Offence Bill 2020, part of ongoing reforms to the nation’s criminal justice system.
Under the existing Criminal Code, which dates back to 1933, same-sex acts can already carry penalties of up to 14 years in prison.
This move signals a continuation of Gambia’s strict stance on homosexuality.
