The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, electrified Benin City on Tuesday as he campaigned for Barrister Olumide Akpata, the party’s governorship candidate for the upcoming September 21st election in Edo State. Obi’s visit sent shockwaves through the ancient city, causing gridlock in key market areas, especially those with heavy Igbo trader presence like Mission Road and New Benin Market.
Not even a morning downpour could deter the thousands of passionate supporters who thronged the state secretariat on Sokponba Road as early as 9 am, still believing Obi to be the true winner of the February presidential election. āIf INEC is free and fair this time, what they robbed us in 2023 with Obiās election, we will gain it in Olumide Akpata,ā declared Peter Okara, a fervent supporter.
Addressing a crowd at Oba Market, Obi criticized the current government for its failures, stating, “There is no light, no water, no security, no fuel. Everything in this country is scattered. What we want in Nigeria is change.” He urged voters to support Akpata and bring transformative change to Edo State.
Olumide Akpata, buoyed by Obiās presence, rallied the crowd, proclaiming, “This is the time for the election; our father is here. On the 21st of September, we will sack those who have misused our resources and put Edo on the path to greatness.”
