British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is believed to have died of suffocation due to a lack of oxygen, according to an investigative source. Initial examinations conducted on Saturday revealed that Lynch’s death occurred after his body was recovered from the family yacht that sank off Sicily’s coast last month.
The yacht, known as the Bayesian, went down during a severe weather event near the port of Porticello on August 19, resulting in the deaths of Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, an onboard cook, and four guests.
The examination results for Hannah Lynch were inconclusive, with initial findings only ruling out trauma or wounds and leaving open the possibility of either drowning or running out of oxygen.
The bodies of the deceased, except for the cook, were discovered in cabins on the left side of the 56-meter vessel, where they may have sought remaining pockets of air.
Preliminary autopsy results for four other victims, including Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judith, suggest suffocation was the likely cause of death. The chef, Recaldo Thomas, was indicated to have drowned. Further forensic tests are pending, with results expected in the coming weeks.
The rapid sinking of the yacht, built by high-end manufacturer Perini, has left naval experts puzzled.
