In a significant move to bolster regional security, Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, on Thursday, hosted a meeting of special advisers on security from Ekiti, Ondo, Kogi, Kwara, and Osun States. This initiative seeks to strengthen the security architecture across the boundaries of these neighbouring states, ensuring the protection of lives and properties.
The meeting, held at Bawa Lodge, Ekiti State Government House, was chaired by Brigadier-General Ebenezer Ogundana (rtd), the Special Adviser on Security to Ekiti State Governor. The attendees included Mr Olugbenga Atiba, Senior Special Assistant on Security from Ondo State; Commander Jerry Omodara from Kogi State; Brigadier Samuel Ojo (rtd.) from Osun State; Brigadier General S.T. Bello from Kwara State; and Dr Adetunberu Oludotun, Director General of Homeland Security, Ekiti State, serving as the Secretary.
In his remarks, Gen. Ogundana explained that the meeting was convened on the directive of Governor Oyebanji in response to the increasing challenges of trans-border insecurity. He highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts among neighbouring states, particularly in addressing inter-border crimes where criminals take advantage of state lines to evade prosecution, noting that intelligence-sharing among the states plays a vital role in curbing criminal activities and ensuring the safety of residents.
He also stated that this inaugural meeting signified the start of a concerted effort towards regional cooperation, with future meetings set to involve local governments in border areas.
Ogundana further noted that stable security is essential for attracting investments, particularly in the agricultural sector where Ekiti is already witnessing significant interest from large-scale agro-investors. He revealed that proactive security measures in Ekiti, especially in farm settlements, are being intensified to encourage farmers to return to their activities without fear, thereby contributing to food security.
The meeting is scheduled to continue periodically, with virtual discussions scheduled as necessary, ensuring the states remain proactive in addressing potential security threats.
