Media Matters for America is considering the purchase of InfoWars following a Houston judge’s ruling that the news service could be liquidated to cover $1.5 billion in damages awarded to the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims.
InfoWars has faced severe backlash for its persistent claims that the 2012 incident was a hoax. Media Matters President Angelo Carusone mentioned that the organization is carefully evaluating this potential acquisition and aims to explore the archives of InfoWars to uncover any unreported material that might hold news value.
In addition to Media Matters, other entities are also exploring the possibility of acquiring InfoWars. Jeff Rotkoff, CEO of Barbed Wire, a Texas-focused digital publication, indicated that while his organization isn’t in a position to buy InfoWars outright at the moment, he is in discussions within his network to explore collaborative bidding opportunities.
This open auction has generated significant interest among nonprofit organizations dedicated to combating misinformation, viewing the potential purchase as a chance to reform InfoWars and reshape its impact on public discourse.
