Mr. Ewaoche Benjamin Obe, a former governorship candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 Benue State election, has been evicted from his home in Abuja after his wife allegedly used the property as collateral for a loan and defaulted.
The house, located in the Sagwari Layout of Dutse in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was constructed by Obe himself. His wife, Christiana Obe, has been married to him since 2006, and they both come from Ogbadibo Local Government Area in Benue State.
Reports indicate that the eviction occurred on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. While traveling to Benue State, Obe received a call informing him that security personnel had invaded his home and were in the process of evicting him. Furious, he quickly turned back along the Keffi road in Nasarawa State.
Upon his return, he was presented with a court document stating that the house had been seized due to an outstanding loan taken out by his wife. Obe expressed to DAILY POST that he had not received any prior court notice before the invasion.
At the scene, military personnel and police officers were present, with Obe’s belongings scattered on the street. Obe lamented, “She has done her worst. This is a house I built with my hard-earned money.”
In a Facebook live session, Obe accused his wife of conspiring with the officers to take over his property, questioning how a court could seize a house without prior notification. When asked if he had been contacted by the lenders regarding the loan, Obe stated he was unaware of any loan taken by his wife and had not been informed beforehand.
He also mentioned that his wife had taken their son to a different location, presumably to a new apartment, before the eviction. Obe denied ever being served with any court documents prior to the eviction, asserting, “I was never served. This was plotted by my wife and the officers that came. We have been having issues for a while, and I think this is her way of getting back at me.”
It was reported that Christiana, who is an officer in the Nigerian Air Force, had moved some of her belongings, including air-conditioners, out of the house before the eviction, leaving without any confrontation as Obe claimed he did not want to cause a scene.
