The Ashiru family is a prominent Ijebu clan, renowned for producing numerous distinguished sons excelling in various fields of endeavor. Their father was well-known in his era as a leading Tax Collector in Ijebuland.
Some of his sons hold the title of Otunbas under the Awujale of Ijebu. They include Prof. Oladapo Ashiru, the esteemed Gynaecologist & Obstetrician, Prof. Toyin Ashiru, the celebrated Metallurgical Engineer, and Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, a Banker and former Commissioner of Ogun.
PROF. OLADAPO ASHIRU OTUNBA ORODUDUJOYE OF IJEBU
Professor Oladapo Ashiru hails from Ogun State and belongs to the illustrious Ashiru family. He completed his primary education at Christ Church Porogun School, Ijebu Ode, and secondary education at Adeola Odutola College, Ijebu Ode, where he was awarded the best graduating student accolade by the Principal in 1966. He proceeded to Ijebu Ode Grammar School for his Higher School Certification. He attended the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, graduating with distinction in Anatomy. His postgraduate training occurred at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. His primary research interests lie in Reproductive Endocrinology and Assisted Reproductive Technology. In 1979, he discovered and documented the positive feedback mechanism of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which is now utilized clinically in assisted conception technologies involving exogenous FSH injections for ovulation stimulation. He pioneered the In-Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer technique in West Africa, conducting experiments in 1983 and human procedures in 1984. He co-pioneered the first test-tube baby via IVF-ET in 1989 alongside Giwa-Osagie. He enhanced the sperm insemination technique and recently introduced pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (pGD) and embryo selection to eliminate abnormalities such as Down’s Syndrome and Sickle Cell, as well as for family balancing. Prof. Ashiru serves as the Chief Medical Director of the MART Group of Health Services, which includes the Medical ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) Center, Mart Medicare (High-Risk Obstetrics and Neonatal Care), and the Mart Life Detox Clinic, the first modern Mayr Clinic in Africa.
