In a recent interview with TV360, Diran Odeyemi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), offered insights into the ongoing internal disputes within Nigeria’s leading opposition party. He argued that for the sake of fostering party unity, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should reconsider his ambitions for the presidency. According to Odeyemi, this move is essential for addressing the current discord afflicting the PDP.
Odeyemi pointed out that the root of the party’s division stems from the clash between individual aspirations and the collective interests of the party. He highlighted that Atiku’s continued interest in the presidential candidacy is exacerbating these divisions. This conflict of interests, he asserted, undermines the PDP’s ability to function effectively as a cohesive political organization.
Additionally, Odeyemi echoed the concerns raised by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who has voiced his discontent regarding perceived injustices within the party. Wike’s comments reflect a desire for a reciprocal commitment to loyalty and support, suggesting that unchecked personal ambitions could further fragment the party. Odeyemi emphasized the importance of cultivating a shared vision that prioritizes party unity over individual pursuits.
To alleviate these tensions, Odeyemi proposed that Atiku should publicly position himself as a unifying leader within the PDP. He suggested that if Atiku were to declare his dedication to the party’s well-being over his personal presidential aspirations, it could foster a more collaborative environment among party members. Such an act of selflessness could mark a pivotal moment for the PDP, rekindling a sense of solidarity among its ranks.
Odeyemi believes that a statement from Atiku could lead to significant shifts within the party, potentially encouraging influential figures like Wike to reconsider their own ambitions. This change could facilitate reconciliation and strengthen the PDP as it prepares for future electoral challenges. He stated, “The only way out of this predicament is to address the personal and presidential ambitions arising soon. Atiku’s continued interest in the candidacy cannot go unchallenged. If he were to position himself as a father figure within the party, I assure you Wike would step back.”
