The Biden administration has officially included Qatar in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, enabling citizens of the Gulf nation to travel to the United States for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa in advance.
The announcement was made by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who emphasized that Qatar’s participation enhances information sharing regarding one of the busiest travel hubs in the world, thereby strengthening U.S. security. Mayorkas stated that Qatar’s compliance with stringent security requirements will deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations, making travel safer and more convenient for both Americans and Qataris.
Qatar’s ambassador to the United States, Meshal Al Thani, expressed pride in this significant milestone in U.S.-Qatar relations. He highlighted that this designation reflects the deepening bond between the two countries, particularly in critical areas such as counterterrorism, financial crime, and human trafficking.
The Visa Waiver Program will update the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization application by December 1, allowing Qatari nationals to apply for travel without a visa.
In return, U.S. citizens will enjoy an extended stay of up to 90 days in Qatar, up from the previous 30-day limit, fostering increased bilateral cooperation in commerce and cultural exchange.
