Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has strongly criticized the police investigation into a recent crime linked to an opposition event, accusing the authorities of blatant bias. In a recent interview with Channels Television, Obaseki expressed his dismay at the way the case has been handled, particularly by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), claiming that the police are favoring the opposition party.
The governor emphasized that the incident occurred over a month and a half ago during an event organized by the opposition party. He noted that no member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was present at the event. “There was no member of the PDP at that event,” Obaseki reiterated, highlighting that his party had no involvement in the matter.
Obaseki went on to criticize the charges brought against those detained, explaining that they were not initially charged with the crime under investigation. He revealed that pressure had been applied on the IGP to file charges, but instead of being charged with murder, the detainees were charged with illegal possession of firearms. According to him, this shift in the charges raises serious concerns about the credibility of the investigation.
“It’s a joke,” Obaseki said, describing his frustration with the process. “The police have been detaining people for over three weeks without trial, and when charges were finally filed, they weren’t for murder, but for illegal possession of firearms.” He further questioned the police’s impartiality, suggesting that their actions reflected a disregard for their responsibility to the public.
Obaseki stressed that the police are funded by taxpayers and should therefore maintain professionalism and fairness in their investigations. He expressed disappointment over what he described as a biased investigation, warning that such behavior undermines public trust in law enforcement institutions.
