…..Calls for Yoruba Nation’s Separation from Nigeria
The national leader of the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, Prof Banji Akintoye, has raised alarming concerns about the ongoing violence in Yoruba land. In a statement issued on Monday during the celebration of Yoruba Unity Day, Akintoye claimed that no fewer than 29,000 Yoruba people have been killed by suspected Fulani bandits, who continue to perpetrate atrocities including the rape of women, kidnappings, and destruction of farmlands.
Akintoye asserted that the only solution to this “horrible situation” is the separation of the Yoruba nation from Nigeria, to ensure their security and preserve their economic autonomy. He emphasized, “The only viable and sustainable answer to all this is to separate our Yoruba nation from Nigeria and establish our own country where we can exercise sovereignty.”
Citing the continuing devastation in rural areas, Akintoye highlighted the urgency of the matter, accusing Fulani terrorists of seizing land, killing and extorting millions in ransom. He called on South West governors and traditional rulers to officially recognize Yoruba Unity Day as a public holiday, stressing the need for collective action to protect the Yoruba people.
Prof Akintoye also expressed disappointment over the limited effectiveness of the regional security outfit, Amotekun, blaming interference from the Federal Government. He warned that the rising insecurity and audacity of Fulani terrorists in Yoruba cities have reached critical levels, reinforcing his push for Yoruba self-determination.
