Ryan Evans, a Reuters safety adviser, was killed and two Reuters journalists were injured in a missile strike on the Hotel Sapphire in Kramatorsk, Ukraine. Evans was part of a six-person team staying at the hotel when it was hit on Saturday.
The two injured journalists are currently receiving medical treatment, with one in serious condition. Reuters is actively seeking more details about the attack and is working with local authorities while providing support to the affected team members and their families.
Evans, a former British soldier who had been with Reuters since 2022, was known for advising journalists on safety in various conflict zones, including Ukraine, and Israel, and at the Paris Olympics. He was 38 years old. The remaining three members of the Reuters team at the hotel were unharmed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attributed the strike to a Russian Iskander missile and condemned the attack as deliberate.
The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented, and Reuters has not independently verified the missile’s origin or the attack’s intent. The Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office is investigating the incident.
