Obi Aguocha, a Labour Party member of the House of Representatives from Abia State, has responded to plans by a group to stage a protest against him, stating that the protest is an attempt to tarnish his reputation.
The group, Niger Delta Youth Peace Builders, alleges that Aguocha has failed to deliver on constituency projects and lacks “accountable representation.”
In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano, Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, claimed that certain individuals are sponsoring the group to undermine him.
“The said group is being sponsored to protest under the guise of lack of constituency projects, accountable representation, and the management of rice palliatives in our great constituency,” Aguocha said.
He acknowledged the group’s right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, as protected by Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, and urged them to conduct their activities peacefully and in accordance with the law.
Aguocha assured his constituents that he prioritizes their safety and well-being, regardless of political affiliation, and encouraged positive engagement during the protest.
Addressing the concerns raised by the group, Aguocha emphasized that he has consistently worked to secure viable projects and human capital development opportunities for the constituency, as outlined in the Appropriations Act 2024. He noted that the Act is open source and easily verifiable.
The lawmaker explained that the projects would be implemented once the federal government releases funds to the contractors. He also highlighted the importance of following due process in awarding these projects to eligible contractors.
“We are committed to maintaining transparency and accountability. We will continue to provide regular updates to our constituents,” Aguocha said.
