Search efforts resumed on Sunday as crews continued to comb the Colorado River at Grand Canyon National Park for Chenoa Nickerson, a 33-year-old woman from Gilbert, Arizona, who went missing after a flash flood on Thursday.
Nickerson was hiking near Havasu Creek, about half a mile from where it joins the Colorado River when the flood hit. She was not wearing a life jacket at the time. Her husband was among the more than 100 people evacuated safely, while Nickerson remains unaccounted for.
Her sister, Tamara Morales, urged the public to hold onto hope, despite unsuccessful attempts to locate Nickerson via her Apple Watch.
The search on Sunday involved air, ground, and motorized boat efforts, focusing on the confluence of Havasu Creek and the Colorado River. Nickerson had been staying at a campground near Supai Village on the Havasupai reservation, which is known for its stunning but flood-prone waterfalls.
The flood also trapped hikers near Beaver Falls, leading to their evacuation by helicopter after bridges were washed away. The Arizona National Guard has been involved in evacuations, with around 104 tribal members and tourists rescued since the flood. The Havasupai reservation, one of the most remote areas in the U.S., can only be accessed by foot, mule, or helicopter.
