Amid a home insurance crisis in Florida that has driven premiums to unsustainable levels for many homeowners, some of the state’s largest insurers have donated nearly half a million dollars to the Florida Republican Party.
An analysis of financial documents on the independent platform OpenSecrets revealed that four of the 20 biggest private insurers in the state—Heritage Insurance, GEICO, American Integrity Insurance, and Slide Insurance—made significant contributions to the Florida GOP or Republican candidates over the past year.
Heritage Insurance, for instance, donated $15,000 to the Florida Republican Party and $1,000 to Florida Republican candidate Simon Corey this year, following a $200,000 contribution to the Florida GOP and $1,000 to candidate Griff Griffitts last year. Meanwhile, GEICO donated $7,500 to Florida Republican candidates in 2023, alongside contributions to other Republican candidates across the country.
American Integrity Insurance and Slide Insurance also made substantial donations to the Florida Republican Party and various Republican candidates.
These contributions come at a time when Florida’s homeowners are grappling with rising insurance premiums, which have left many turning to the state’s insurer of last resort, Citizens, as private insurers pull back or exit the state altogether.
