Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has responded to the Nigerian Police Force’s invitation of Joe Ajero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), regarding allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, and treasonable felony. Adeyanju expressed concern that the police’s approach suggests a pre-determined judgment of Ajero’s guilt.
In a statement, Adeyanju criticized the police for what he perceived as a threatening tone in the invitation letter, issued on August 19, 2024. He acknowledged the police’s authority to invite individuals for questioning but warned that the letter’s content indicates a bias against Ajero.
Adeyanju urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the force does not escalate tensions within the country. He emphasized that he and other concerned Nigerians will not passively watch as the nation potentially moves towards fascism. He called for restraint and fairness in the handling of the case to prevent further political unrest.
